What is IV therapy?
IV therapy (short for intravenous therapy) delivers fluids, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients directly into your bloodstream through a small catheter placed in a vein, typically in your arm.
That might sound clinical, but the concept is straightforward: when you take a vitamin orally, your gut absorbs only a fraction of it. By going intravenous, what's in the bag goes directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive filter that limits oral absorption.
IV therapy has been used in hospitals for decades: for rehydration, nutrient supplementation, and medication delivery. What's changed is the availability of elective wellness IV in outpatient settings, where healthy people use it proactively to feel better, recover faster, and support specific health goals.
"I think of IV therapy as giving your cells exactly what they need, bypassed all the barriers that usually slow things down: digestion, absorption, conversion. It's direct delivery."
How does IV therapy work?
Here's what happens at the cellular level. When a nutrient enters your bloodstream directly:
- No digestive loss. Oral supplements lose 20 to 70% of their potency before they reach your bloodstream. IV bypasses that entirely.
- Immediate availability. Nutrients are circulating within minutes, not hours.
- Higher serum levels possible. Certain nutrients (like Vitamin C and NAD+) can only reach therapeutic concentrations via IV. Oral doses hit absorption limits that IV doesn't have.
- Rapid rehydration. A 1-liter IV bag rehydrates you far faster than drinking water, because it goes directly into your vascular system.
The session itself is simple: a nurse places a small catheter (usually a 22-gauge) in a vein in your arm or hand, secures it, and connects the drip bag. You sit back for 30 to 60 minutes while the bag drips in at a controlled rate. When it's done, the catheter is removed. It leaves no mark.
What to expect on your first visit
First-timers are often surprised at how relaxed the experience is. Here's a typical flow at Signature Vitality:
- 1Check-in & intake
You'll fill out a brief health intake: allergies, current meds, relevant history. This takes about 5 minutes and helps your nurse personalize your session.
- 2Nurse consultation
Your RN reviews your intake, answers questions, and confirms the right drip or add-ons for your goals. This is a real clinical conversation, not a sales pitch.
- 3Placement & setup
Your nurse places a small IV catheter. It takes about 30 seconds. Most people describe it as a brief pinch, far less discomforting than a blood draw.
- 4The drip
You sit in a comfortable recliner and relax for 30 to 60 minutes while the bag infuses. Most people scroll their phone, read, or doze off. You can talk, eat, or drink during the session.
- 5Removal & you're done
When the bag empties, the catheter is removed and a small bandage is applied. You can drive yourself home. No downtime.
Total time at the studio: typically 45 to 75 minutes for your first visit (a little longer due to intake), 30 to 60 minutes for subsequent visits.
Common IV drips
At Signature Vitality, every drip starts with a Lactated Ringer's (LR) or Normal Saline (NS) base: a sterile isotonic solution that hydrates and supports electrolyte balance. Nutrients are added to that base. Here are the most popular formulas:
Our flagship formula. B-Complex, B-12, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Glutathione, and Trace Elements: the broad-spectrum starting point.
Zofran, Toradol, B-Complex, Magnesium, Glutathione, and electrolyte hydration. Built for post-celebration or post-travel recovery.
5g Vitamin C, Zinc, Glutathione, B-Complex, and Lysine: the full antioxidant and immune-support stack.
AminoMultiplex, Magnesium, B-Complex, Glutathione, and electrolyte hydration: built for muscle repair and performance recovery.
Double Glutathione, 2g Vitamin C, Biotin, Zinc, and B-Complex. The skin and glow drip.
NAD+ is a cellular coenzyme involved in energy metabolism, recovery, and healthy aging support. Higher dose sessions take longer and are nurse-guided.
What's actually in a drip?
Every nutrient in our drips is pharmaceutical-grade and sourced from licensed compounding pharmacies. Here are the ones you'll see most often:
Is IV therapy safe?
IV therapy is very safe when administered by a qualified nurse who screens clients properly and follows clinical protocols. Serious adverse events in elective wellness IV are rare.
That said, it is a medical procedure (a needle goes into a vein) and it should be treated as one. That's why we only hire Registered Nurses and never technicians or unlicensed staff. Every session at Signature Vitality is administered by an RN with hospital experience.
Common, minor side effects
- Mild bruising or soreness at the insertion site (goes away in 1 to 2 days)
- Slight coolness or tingling sensation during infusion (normal; tell your nurse if it's uncomfortable)
- Flushing or warmth with certain nutrients (especially B vitamins)
- Lightheadedness if you haven't eaten. Always eat something before your session.
How we keep you safe
- Every client completes a health intake before their first session
- Your nurse reviews your history and current medications
- All supplies are single-use and sterile, opened fresh for each client
- Infusion rates are controlled and monitored throughout
- Epinephrine and emergency supplies are on-site at all times
How much does IV therapy cost?
At Signature Vitality, the Vital Drip starts at $105 and named IV drips currently run from $155-$405 depending on the formula, dose, and add-ons. Here's a breakdown:
Is IV therapy covered by insurance? Elective wellness IV is not covered by standard health insurance. However, it may be reimbursable through an HSA or FSA. Check with your plan administrator.
Are wellness plans worth it? If you plan to get IV therapy more than 4 to 5 times a year, a wellness plan typically saves 15 to 25% per session compared to individual drip pricing. Sessions never expire and can be shared with family members.
Who shouldn't get IV therapy?
IV therapy is safe for most healthy adults, but there are contraindications your nurse will screen for. You may not be a candidate (or may need a modified protocol) if you have:
- Kidney disease or impaired kidney function: IV fluids and some nutrients require healthy kidneys to process
- Congestive heart failure: fluid volume must be carefully managed
- G6PD deficiency: high-dose Vitamin C can cause hemolysis in this genetic condition
- Active infection with fever: wait until resolved before adding IV nutrients
- Severe needle phobia or difficult venous access: discuss with your nurse
- Pregnancy: some nutrients are not indicated during pregnancy; consult your OB first
This list is not exhaustive. That's why we do a health intake for every new client. Your nurse will identify anything that warrants discussion or a modified approach. When in doubt, we'll ask you to consult your primary care provider first.
Frequently asked questions
How often can I get IV therapy?+
Most wellness clients come once or twice a month. During illness, intense training, or high-stress periods, weekly sessions are safe for otherwise healthy adults. Your nurse will help you find the right cadence.
How quickly will I feel it?+
Many clients notice energy, clarity, or improved mood within hours of a session. Hydration effects are felt almost immediately. Some benefits (like immune support or skin changes) build over repeat sessions.
Can I eat before an IV session?+
Yes. We recommend it. Having a light meal or snack beforehand reduces the likelihood of lightheadedness and makes insertion easier. Arrive well-hydrated too.
Can I get a drip if I'm sick right now?+
It depends. For mild fatigue or early-stage illness, an Immune Defense or Bounce Back drip can help. For active infection with high fever, we'll ask you to reschedule until your fever breaks.
How is this different from a Myers' Cocktail?+
The Myers' Cocktail is a classic IV formula developed in the 1960s by Dr. John Myers: Magnesium, B-Complex, Vitamin C, and Calcium. Our drips are inspired by that formula but formulated by our nurses with updated ingredient lists and higher nutrient concentrations.
Is there a consultation fee?+
No. The nurse consultation is included with every session at no extra charge.
